Speech bubbles with stars and a magnifying glass – reading customer reviews

Reviews are one of the most useful tools a customer has. But the star average on its own can mislead you. Two brands with the same rating can offer very different experiences. Here is how to read reviews properly in a few minutes.

Look at the number of reviews, not only the average

A 5.0 rating from three reviews says much less than a 4.4 from three hundred. The more reviews a brand has, the more reliable its average becomes. With very few reviews, read each one rather than trusting the number.

Check how recent they are

Brands change. A great rating from two years ago does not guarantee good service today, and a brand with old complaints may have improved. Sort by newest and read the last ten or twenty reviews to see what customers experience now.

Read the low ratings first

One- and two-star reviews tell you what can go wrong. Ask yourself:

  • Is it the same problem again and again — late delivery, wrong size, poor quality?
  • Is the problem something that matters to you?
  • Is the complaint specific and believable, or vague and angry?

Then read the middle ratings

Three- and four-star reviews are often the most balanced. They mention what was good and what could be better, which gives you a realistic picture of the brand.

Watch for signs of fake reviews

  • Many five-star reviews posted on the same day
  • Very short, generic praise such as “Good product, recommended” repeated many times
  • Reviewers with no history or no profile picture
  • Reviews that talk about a different product

See how the brand replies

A thoughtful reply to a complaint — apologising, explaining and fixing the problem — is a strong sign of a brand that cares. No replies, copy-paste replies or arguments with customers tell you a lot too.

Compare across platforms

Look at reviews on more than one place: the brand’s page, Google, marketplaces and independent platforms. On Review Mark, every review is checked by our team before it appears, and brand pages also show ratings from across the web where available.

Reading reviews this way takes only a few minutes, and it turns a single number into a clear, honest picture of what to expect.
